Spahn Rejects Collaboration with Far-Right AfD Party

Jens Spahn, a leading figure within the CDU parliamentary group, has firmly rejected any prospect of cooperation with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, dismissing recent speculation regarding a potential rapprochement.

In an interview with “Focus” magazine, Spahn addressed the rumors, asserting his long-standing opposition to the AfD’s rhetoric. He highlighted his past confrontations with what he described as the party’s “hate and incitement” noting that he had been actively addressing these issues even before some of his current critics entered the Bundestag.

Spahn specifically recalled instances of personal abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that he was a primary target of protesters who labelled him with harsh accusations. He indicated he would be amongst the first individuals targeted should the AfD gain significant political power.

Responding to suggestions originating from within the SPD that he might be open to a coalition with the AfD, Spahn expressed bewilderment. He characterized the criticism as unfounded “rumours” that perpetuate themselves without basis. He questioned the source and validity of these claims, maintaining his firm stance against any form of collaboration with the AfD.
