Spain has secured a place in the Women’s European Championship final after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Germany. The semi-final clash, played to a tense conclusion, saw Aitana Bonmatí score the decisive goal in the 113th minute, sealing the win for the Spanish side.
The match began with an evenly matched first half, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the back of the net. Germany saw an early chance fall to Klara Bühl, while Spain increased their attacking pressure towards the end of the period. The second half saw a shift in momentum, with Germany briefly gaining control and presenting opportunities for Giovanna Hoffmann and Carlotta Wamser. These attempts, however, were thwarted by a resolute Spanish defence and goalkeeper Cata Coll.
The deciding moments arrived during extra time. A well-placed pass from Athenea del Castillo set up Aitana Bonmatí, who expertly converted to give Spain the lead. Despite renewed efforts from the German team, they were unable to level the score.
Spain will now face England in the final, after England also secured a victory against Italy in extra time, winning 2:1. The fixture marks a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final.
