After the decision on the Mercosur trade agreement in the European Parliament, the SPD has taken a strong stance against the Greens, accusing them of stupidity and lack of instinct.
Dirk Wiese, the SPD parliament secretary in the Bundestag, told the “Rheinische Post” on Friday that it is politically foolish and instinctless for some Greens, along with the AfD and the Left, to stall the agreement’s implementation in the present political environment. He added that the Greens’ contradictory behaviour is bewildering.
While party leader Katharina Dröge calls for an EU that acts as a counterforce and praises the Canadian prime minister for his speech in Davos, Wiese noted that for years it was the Greens-particularly Dröge-who actively fought the CETA free‑trade pact with Canada. “Now the Greens have once again weakened the EU’s striking power” he said.
Several Green members of the European Parliament voted on Wednesday to refer the Mercosur treaty to the European Court of Justice, a move that is likely to delay its ratification. Critics warn that the agreement could lead to more deforestation, provide no robust industrial outlook for the South American countries, and disadvantage European farmers.
