In light of the steep rise in fuel prices in Germany, the SPD is calling for stricter antitrust regulation and an increase in the commuter allowance.
“Fuel prices here have risen much faster than in our neighboring countries in recent weeks” said SPD parliamentary spokesman Sebastian Roloff to the news portal T‑Online on Monday. He argued that this points to a failure in the fuel market and stated that the party would “tighten antitrust law this week”. This move would grant the Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) more long‑term resources.
Roloff also urged the party to consider additional measures, such as a fuel‑price brake and a higher commuter allowance for 2026 to relieve workers. He added that stronger regulation of oil companies could prevent “major firms from raking in record profits at the expense of consumers”.
