The SPD’s economic faction, the “Seeheimer Kreis” is calling for the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on nutritious food items. According to Esra Limbacher, the head of the Seeheimer Kreis and a deputy group leader in the SPD parliamentary group, inflation is damaging both the economy and the average citizen. She stated that the country needs a measure to curb inflation for ordinary people.
While acknowledging that German politics cannot control international oil prices, Limbacher emphasized that they can prevent the rising costs of energy and food from excessively impacting German household finances. Her specific demand is to reduce the VAT on healthy groceries, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, bread, pasta, rice, eggs, and water, to zero percent. She argued that a child’s access to healthy food should not depend on its parents’ bank balance. Notably, this proposed tax reduction would not cover items like chocolate, chips, or cola.
