SPD Defends 2035 Deadline Amidst Opposition

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has voiced its disagreement with a recent call from Markus Söder, leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), to reconsider the European Union’s planned ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in 2035.

Dirk Wiese, the SPD parliamentary group’s first parliamentary managing director, emphasized the need for planning certainty within the automotive industry. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Wiese stated that continuous discussions over dates and data ultimately create uncertainties for the sector. He pointed out that existing EU regulations already allow for the continuation of ICE vehicle sales beyond 2035, provided they operate on alternative fuels such as e-fuels. Regarding Söder’s proposal, Wiese suggested a more cautious approach.

The recent IAA motor show, Wiese noted, demonstrated that German manufacturers are increasingly introducing electric vehicle models accessible to a wider consumer base. He cautioned that any renewed uncertainty surrounding the 2035 deadline could hinder the market’s continued growth and adoption of electric vehicles.
