SPD parliamentary representative Annika Klose is defending the pension commission’s recommendation for increasing the legal retirement age. Speaking to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group, the social policy spokesperson for her faction stated that most younger people feel their pensions may not be sufficient in the future.
Klose elaborated that the commission is set to present a concept on Tuesday, which she believes will require increased payments but ultimately result in improved benefits. She noted that surveys consistently show over 75 percent of Germans, including younger demographics, are willing to pay more contributions provided the benefits increase in return. For this reason, she believes the younger generation will also be accepting of the changes.
This stance comes amid sharp criticism from groups such as the Social Democrats’ youth wing. Philipp Türmer, head of the SPD youth organization, argued that tying the retirement age to general life expectancy is socially unjust. The pension commission, which has been meeting since winter, will officially present its recommendations regarding the upcoming pension reform to the federal government this Tuesday.
