SPD Defends Platzeck’s Russia Visits

Former SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich has publicly defended the recent travels of his party colleague Matthias Platzeck to Russia. In an interview with “Der Spiegel” Mützenich expressed gratitude for Platzeck’s willingness, alongside other former politicians, to contribute to de-escalating the conflict in Ukraine and potentially paving the way for a resolution, citing their integrity and experience.

Mützenich emphasized that Platzeck consistently condemns the war crimes committed by Putin’s regime during these engagements. He also cautioned against limiting dialogue solely to representatives from other countries, particularly those at a lower official level.

Mützenich believes Platzeck’s motivations are purely humanitarian and peace-oriented, dismissing any suggestion of personal gain. He asserted that Platzeck’s actions are driven by a sincere desire to contribute to a peaceful outcome.

SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner echoed this sentiment, criticizing the accusations and condemnation directed at Platzeck. Stegner described Platzeck as a respected politician now actively working to end the war in Ukraine as a private citizen. He acknowledged that Platzeck has been engaging in conversations with Russian representatives as part of this endeavor.

Stegner further argued that all possible avenues for ending the conflict should be explored and that dismissing dialogues purely based on the perceived behavior of the counterpart is counterproductive. This stance comes after Stegner himself faced scrutiny earlier this year for attending a meeting with Russian officials in Baku, Azerbaijan.
