SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf is advocating for the retention of the full early retirement pension after 45 years of contribution, arguing against its proposed abolition in the planned pension reform. Speaking to Bild (Saturday edition), he stated that the party’s position on this matter remains clear. Klüssendorf emphasized that individuals who have worked for many years and paid their contributions should have the option to retire without deductions at an earlier age, adding that this measure is “not a gift and not special treatment,” but something they have earned.
Klüssendorf further commented that the abolition of the pension at age 63 “has always been a central demand of the CDU.” He suggested that if the CDU were now willing to change its stance and align with their view, it would send a positive signal. He also referenced recent statements by East German state premiers opposing the repeal of the age 63 pension. Klüssendorf recalled that the SPD was the party that initially introduced the full pension after 45 years of insurance. Though he conceded that the commission’s recommendation to abolish it is a “painful part of the overall package for pension reform,” he insists the measure must remain in place.
