SPD Demands Consequences After AfD Declared an Extremist Group in Lower Saxony

Sonja Eichwede, the second deputy parliamentary group chair of the SPD, has demanded that the recent upgrade of the AfD in Lower Saxony by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution be followed by real consequences.
In an interview with the “Rheinische Post”‘s Wednesday edition, she said: “Designating the AfD as an extremist organization in another federal state shows that the party is becoming even more radical. This is yet another warning that forces us to act”.

Eichwede stressed that safeguarding the liberal‑democratic constitutional order is a duty that must be taken seriously. “We must heed the indications and classifications issued by the security services and consider all instruments at our disposal” she added.

A federal‑state working group is currently assessing what the classification could mean for AfD members in terms of civil service and firearms regulations. In parallel, the group is reviewing every constitutional tool that is available to protect the democracy.
