Facing the steep rise in fuel prices caused by the Iran war, SPD Secretary‑General Tim Klüssendorf is demanding additional actions to ease consumer costs.
He told the “Rheinische Post” that “a binding daily price cap for all market participants is necessary”. In Luxembourg and Belgium, the Ministry of Economy has already set maximum prices for gasoline, diesel and heating oil. “When prices fall below that cap, oil companies compete for the lowest price” Klüssendorf explained.
Klüssendorf also urged a temporary reduction of the energy tax so that pump prices drop noticeably and mobility remains affordable. “The pump must not become a self‑service shop for crisis profits” he said. He called for a “super‑profit tax” to curb the “unreasonable gains of oil multinationals” and redirect those proceeds back to citizens.
His aim is to blunt the economic impact of the Iran war as far as possible. “The measures the Economy Minister has implemented so far are insufficient” he argued. The Bundestag factions’ task force has given clear instructions to Minister Katherina Reiche that must be executed urgently. Klüssendorf warned that crisis should never become a business model. While prices rise, oil giants continue to seek profit from the situation, and he insists it cannot be that ordinary people live in constant worry about the month’s end because a handful of large firms keep inflating absurd profits.
