SPD Demands Unity From CDU/CSU

Following the parliamentary summer recess, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is urging its coalition partner, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), to demonstrate greater adherence to coalition agreements.

Annika Klose, SPD parliamentary group spokesperson for social policy, stated in interviews with RTL and ntv that the current dynamic within the governing coalition is unsustainable. She specifically called on CDU leader Friedrich Merz to adopt a less divisive rhetorical approach, suggesting his recent statements have been unnecessarily polarizing.

Klose cited the failed attempt to elect new Federal Constitutional Court judges as a prime example of what she characterized as a lack of cooperation from the CDU/CSU. She contrasted this with the SPD’s decision to support the extension of the suspension of family reunification for refugees, despite significant reservations, highlighting what she perceives as a discrepancy in the commitment to coalition agreements.

Klose expressed hope that the CDU and CSU will demonstrate increased unity and adherence to agreed-upon policies moving forward.
