The SPD backs the CDU’s plan to submit a bid for the 2042 men’s FIFA World Cup.
Parliamentary secretary Dirk Wiese told the “Rheinische Post” that the SPD gives its full support to another bid in a country with a long and rich football tradition.
He recalled that during the 2006 World Cup the world was a guest of friends and called the event a football festival, noting that a modern, open Germany hosted the tournament well.
Wiese also pointed out that the 2024 European Championship was a great success on home soil.
According to the “Rheinische Post”, the CDU intends to adopt a resolution at its federal party convention in Stuttgart in February that will launch a bid for the 2042 World Cup.
