SPD Leader Calls for Party to Strengthen Worker Advocate Role and Address Coalition Discord

Brandenburg’s Minister-President, Dietmar Woidke of the SPD, has stated that his party needs to become more visibly committed to the interests of working people. Speaking to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Saturday edition), he noted that while significant efforts have been made in recent years, particularly in the social sector, they were evidently insufficient to establish a solid foundation going forward.

Woidke expressed concern regarding the public’s declining confidence in the parties’ ability to solve problems. He recalled a time when democratic parties debated which proposals offered the best path for the future, but stated that the current situation demands a unified demonstration of problem-solving capability to create viable perspectives for the region, which he implied refers to Brandenburg, but also Germany as a whole. Consequently, he clarified that he does not intend to assign blame to the federal government for shortcomings in Brandenburg; instead, he stressed the need for joint efforts with the federal government to improve the situation.

In this context, Woidke criticized the BSW (Bundeswehr-Stabilisierungs- und Wettbewerbspartei) for allegedly becoming unwilling to engage in constructive cooperation within the joint coalition with the SPD. The Minister-President argued that any party that needs to reach compromises to act responsibly cannot afford to adopt populist tactics.

The coalition with the BSW dissolved in January, and Woidke currently leads a coalition composed of the SPD and the CDU. He continues to express regret that this separation became necessary, adding that the alliance with the BSW “was an experiment, but it could have also worked”.
