SPD Leader Miersch Slams Merz for Singling Out Migrants in Women‑Violence Debate

The SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz of single‑handedly focusing on migrants in a Bundestag debate on violence against women. “I find that the chancellor’s response was inadequate” Miersch told the German editorial network (free‑issue editions) about Merz’s appearance in a parliamentary question period. He said the focus was regrettable.

The SPD politician argued that violence against women must be examined broadly rather than narrowed down to a single population group such as migrants. “The chancellor fails to see the deeper issue: violence against women has no connection to origin or religion. It is a societal problem that must be addressed clearly. The protection of victims is paramount, regardless of the perpetrator’s background” he said.

During the session, Merz had criticised the prevalence of violent acts in society, both offline and online, and claimed that a large share of this violence came from immigrants.
