SPD Leader Praises Merz’s Ukraine Diplomacy Approach

A leading figure within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has publicly commended the foreign policy approach of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) regarding ongoing negotiations concerning the situation in Ukraine. Siemtje Möller, Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader of the SPD, stated in a televised interview with Phoenix that Merz has “taken the initiative to unify the European position.

Despite the absence of direct European representation at the recent meeting between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin, Möller indicated observations suggesting a growing recognition of a unified European voice. She noted a shift in President Trump’s rhetoric, moving away from expectations of an immediate “deal” and towards framing the discussions as preparatory for future negotiations.

Möller credited Merz with proactively establishing foreign policy initiatives alongside European partners, thereby strengthening Europe’s position. She expressed hope that the Alaska summit would foster conditions conducive to meaningful talks, emphasizing that any potential territorial concessions by Ukraine remain solely within the nation’s discretion.

The SPD representative further highlighted the importance of Europe maintaining a clear focus on its own interests, advocating for this to be prioritized alongside the strategy of the U.S. administration, which she characterized as potentially unpredictable.
