SPD Nominates Emmenegger for German Constitutional Court Role

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has nominated Sigrid Emmenegger as a potential judge for the Federal Constitutional Court. This proposal, detailed in a letter from the First Parliamentary Managing Directors of the Union and SPD to their respective parliamentary groups, was reported by the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

The nomination of Emmenegger, currently a judge at the Federal Administrative Court, requires a two-thirds majority vote in the Bundestag. This means she would need not only the support of the governing coalition factions, CDU/CSU and SPD, but also the backing of either the Green Party and The Left, or the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The previous attempt to elect a judge – Juraprofessorin Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf – failed prior to the Bundestag’s summer recess. The Union withdrew its previously promised support for Brosius-Gersdorf on the morning of the election.
