SPD Nominates New Judge for Germany’s Top Court

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has identified a new candidate for the position of judge at Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe, according to a statement by SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch. Speaking to television broadcasters RTL and ntv, Miersch confirmed the selection but declined to disclose the candidate’s name.

“We have a name” he stated, “and I absolutely will not reveal it at this time”. He emphasized the necessity of cross-party discussions, indicating ongoing negotiations with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), as well as the Green Party and The Left party, to secure the required two-thirds majority needed for approval.

Miersch highlighted efforts to establish a constructive working relationship with CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn. However, he acknowledged recent difficulties in the selection process, referencing the withdrawal of SPD-nominated jurist Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf before the summer recess, after failing to garner sufficient support from the CDU. The previous lack of consensus underscored the challenges in securing agreement on appointments to the high court.
