SPD Stands by Candidate Choice for Germany’s Constitutional Court

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has rejected a proposal from the Christian Social Union (CSU) advocating for entirely new candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court. SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf has reiterated the party’s steadfast support for Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, emphasizing her qualifications and the fact that she was jointly proposed by the SPD and the CDU, securing the necessary two-thirds majority within the judges’ election committee.

Klüssendorf stated that the responsibility now rests with the CDU/CSU to address any concerns directly with Ms. Brosius-Gersdorf. He expressed surprise at the prospect of a refusal to engage in direct dialogue and voiced optimism that the CDU/CSU will ultimately unite behind her candidacy, pointing to the dissolution of previous allegations of plagiarism.

While immediate urgency is not paramount, Klüssendorf indicated that a decision is needed before the end of the summer recess to allow for parliamentary procedure.

Addressing broader coalition dynamics and criticisms directed at CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, Klüssendorf emphasized the need to rebuild trust within the governing alliance. He underscored that a stable foundation is crucial for the coalition to effectively manage the remainder of the legislative term.

Regarding the controversial “mask affair” Klüssendorf affirmed that the SPD has not ruled out supporting a parliamentary inquiry committee against former Health Minister Jens Spahn to ensure a thorough and comprehensive review of the decisions and circumstances surrounding the procurement of essential medical equipment. He reiterated the importance of a complete and unbiased investigation into the matter.
