A year after the current federal government began, the SPD has publicly reaffirmed its commitment to remaining in the coalition. Speaking at a parliamentary group meeting in the Bundestag on Tuesday, SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch stated that “things are slowly taking shape locally”. He added that the party is looking forward to, and feels highly confident about, the next three years.
SPD party chairman and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil echoed the commitment to continuation during the same meeting. He stressed that their shared path forward remains unchanged. Klingbeil affirmed that the party will work tirelessly and make compromises daily to ensure the coalition’s success. While acknowledging that public trust in politics has recently declined, he stated that they intend to counteract this trend by focusing heavily on “reforms”.
However, the current government is reportedly performing at historically low levels in polls. Political analysis notes that if a general election were called at this moment, the CDU/CSU (Union) and the SPD would not possess a sufficient majority to govern on their own.
