SPD legal expert Carmen Wegge urged the justice ministers of Germany’s federal states to revise the law curriculum and insert criminal law on sexual offences. “Studying law is the right starting point to improve victim protection and to achieve fairer jurisprudence” she told the news magazine Focus, adding that sexual‑offence criminal law is currently absent from the curriculum. Wegge warned that this gap in training reinforces a common lack of understanding of the dynamics of sexual violence. Lawyers, court officials and police officers who will work with these matters later must therefore gain the necessary knowledge. She also noted that the same applies to the Istanbul Convention, which should become mandatory by the time of the second examination at the latest. “I would welcome a focused discussion on this issue at the next justice‑ministers’ conference” she said.
