Spielplatz OUT New Term Revealed Shocking Change

The city of Cologne is undergoing a renaming initiative for its public playgrounds, aiming to adopt a more inclusive and comprehensive terminology. Starting this autumn, all existing playgrounds will be rebranded as “Spiel- und Aktionsfläche” which translates to “Play and Activity Area”. The change necessitates the replacement of approximately 700 signs across the city.

According to an internal administrative document, the rationale behind the shift is to better reflect an “expanded concept of inclusion” that considers the diversity of users based on age, cultural background and potential disabilities. City officials argue that the new designation is more accurate, as the facilities are intended to cater to a wider range of age groups and target audiences.

The term “Spielplatz” (playground) is perceived by the city administration as overly restrictive, failing to fully encompass the diverse activities and user groups the facilities are designed to accommodate. The move signals a broader effort to promote accessibility and inclusivity within the city’s public spaces.
