Startup Numbers Climb Despite Fewer Large Firm Operations

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany saw a quarter-over-quarter expansion in total new commercial establishments in the first quarter of 2026. While the total number of new businesses starting was approximately 188,900-an increase of 10.1 percent compared to the previous year-the total number of general business registrations rose by 9.3 percent, reaching around 225,300. These registrations include not only brand new businesses but also processes such as business takeovers, conversions (like mergers or spin-offs), and relocations from other reporting areas.

Regarding large enterprises, 37,500 businesses were established in the first quarter of 2026, which are defined as those with significant economic impact based on their legal structure and employee count. This represented an increase of 2.8 percent in large new businesses compared to the same time last year. However, the total number of full operational tasks performed by these significant businesses saw a decline of 5.7 percent, settling at approximately 28,400.

In other news, the overall count of substantial business tasks in the first quarter of 2026 was slightly lower than in the first quarter of 2025. The total number of these tasks recorded was around 139,400, representing a decrease of 2.0 percent year-on-year. Additionally, the total number of business departures-which includes transfers like sales or partner withdrawals, conversions, or movements to different reporting areas-dropped by 4.3 percent, reaching approximately 167,500.
