State Election Decides Fate: Wagenknecht Argues Saxony-Anhalt Vote Could Topple Merz’s Government

Sahra Wagenknecht, a founder of the BSW party, believes that the state election in Saxony-Anhalt presents an opportunity to destabilize the coalition at the federal level as well. She told media outlets of the Funke-Mediengruppe that the election in Saxony-Anhalt is “directly about federal politics.” She asserted that whether Sven Schulze can maintain the position of Minister-President “will likely decide how long Friedrich Merz remains Chancellor.”

Wagenknecht argued that the policies and leadership of federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) are detrimental to the state. She stated that “it would be a blessing if his government collapses.” The founder of the BSW criticized Merz, citing cuts to the social welfare system and what she views as unnecessary military rearmament. However, she also added that the state election is “naturally” about starting fresh in Saxony-Anhalt.
