Steinmeier Successor: CDU Open to Both Male & Female Candidates

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has not yet determined whether it will nominate a female candidate to succeed current German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, according to CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann.

Speaking to the Funke Media Group newspapers, Linnemann stated the decision remains open but acknowledged that a female nominee “would be a good signal”. When asked about the qualities of an ideal candidate, Linnemann referenced the presidency of Joachim Gauck, praising his ability to stimulate debate while remaining relatable to everyday citizens.

Linnemann indicated that speculation regarding European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a potential candidate is unlikely, noting that, to his knowledge, von der Leyen has expressed no interest in the position. A spokesperson for von der Leyen had previously denied any ambitions for the presidency. The next Federal President will be elected by the Federal Convention in 2027.

Beyond the presidential succession, Linnemann also advocated for a significant reduction in the size of the German civil service. He proposed limiting direct employment to positions requiring a particularly strong allegiance to the state, such as law enforcement, fire services and other security roles, as well as financial administration and customs officials.

Linnemann highlighted that most civil service appointments occur at the state level, but emphasized the potential for reform within the federal government. He stated the aim of reducing staff numbers in federal ministries by eight percent by 2029 and suggested a broader assessment of whether direct, permanent employment is necessary for all positions within those ministries.
