Stifterverband Urges Unified Standards for Side‑Entry Teachers to Thwart Germany’s Growing Teacher Shortage

The Stifterverband calls for binding quality standards and a systematic qualification process for side‑entrants-teachers who enter the profession from other fields-in order to stop a decline in professional standards. In a paper reported by the “Handelsblatt”, the organisation urges, among other measures, mandatory preparation before a first teaching assignment and closer supervision during the start of the career.

The need for side‑entrants stems from an “acute and partly dramatic shortage of teachers”. However, without clear standards and structured programmes, the risk of de‑professionalisation exists. Side‑entrants assume “large responsibility from the very first lesson” according to Bettina Jorzik of the Stifterverband. In the 2023/24 school year, Destatis reports that about ten percent of teachers in general education schools were side‑entrants.

Specific recommendations include:
” At least three months of pre‑qualification training
” Expansion of part‑time professional development courses
” Stronger linkage between university studies and on‑the‑ground school practice
” Regular evaluation of programmes
” Development of nationwide, harmonised quality standards

“Viewing side‑entry not merely as a stop‑gap measure but as a viable alternative route into the profession requires laying it on a solid foundation” the paper states.
