Streaming Pay & Aging Gracefully

The veteran German singer Howard Carpendale has expressed gratitude for having moved beyond overtly sensual themes in his music, particularly as he approaches his 80th birthday. In an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ), Carpendale reflected on his evolving artistic career, stating he would no longer feel comfortable exploring those topics given his age. He acknowledged the success of his colleague Roland Kaiser, who continues to incorporate such elements in his performances, while affirming his own contentment with his current artistic direction.

Carpendale emphasized his commitment to performing his classic hits during live concerts. He voiced disapproval of artists, referencing Barbra Streisand, who choose to avoid their signature songs, believing that delivering those familiar favorites is crucial for fans. He recounted a recent concert experience where a rapper spontaneously joined him during a performance of “Das schöne Mädchen von Seite eins” creating a surprising and enjoyable moment for the audience.

However, the singer has also voiced concerns about the financial models of music streaming services. He lamented a perceived shift in the industry, noting a decline in the presence of the creative and passionate individuals who once defined it. Carpendale suggested that the current streaming landscape disproportionately benefits those who are already wealthy, while depriving the songwriters and composers – the very individuals who underpin the industry – of fair compensation. He acknowledged that his own financial situation is protected from this trend, but expressed concern for contemporary artists struggling to sustain themselves through songwriting. He described the situation as an injustice rarely seen in other sectors.
