Streeck Opposes Blanket Social‑Media Ban, Demands Evidence‑Based Measures to Protect Children

Hendrik Streeck, the federal commissioner for addiction and drug policy and a member of the CDU, doubts that a blanket social‑media ban will work. In a conversation with “Focus” he said, “We need an evidence‑based package: more media literacy, binding age limits, clear platform responsibilities and safeguards against addictive design”. He warned that a general ban alone won’t solve the problem.

Streeck, a virologist, also highlighted the negative effects of social networks. “Studies show that already one in four children develops problematic or risky media‑use habits” he explained. “This is not only a matter of individual behavior but also of platform structures”.

Regarding the SPD’s proposal to prohibit social‑media use for those younger than 14, he added, “That’s why I support, across party lines, any initiative that strengthens child and youth protection online-even the current debate”.
