Study Finds Only 16% of Germans Can Identify Native Mushrooms 🚫🍄

Most people in Germany can correctly identify only a handful of native mushroom species. A study by the University of Trier, announced by the university on Monday, found that participants recognized only 16.7 % of the species shown on average. More than a quarter of respondents were unable to identify even a single species.

The biology‑didactics study surveyed 747 individuals. Roughly one third of the participants could accurately judge the edibility of fungi, but 70 % could not provide a list of five species. A majority mistakenly believed that mushrooms are plants.

“Informed people tend to appreciate and protect what they recognize” said study author Ina Schanz, noting that species knowledge is a key foundation for conservation. As a result, the university is developing a new teaching-learning module for schools to introduce the ecological importance of fungi at an earlier stage.
