Sudan Crisis: UNICEF Condemns Deadly Attacks on Civilians

The Executive Director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, has strongly condemned the deadly attacks in North Kordofan, Sudan, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 450 civilians over the weekend. According to media reports, the attacks, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, tragically claimed the lives of at least 24 boys, 11 girls and two pregnant women.

Russell described the incidents as “a scandal” expressing grave concern that the number of child casualties could rise further given the injuries sustained by dozens more individuals and the numerous people still missing.

The attacks represent a disturbing escalation of violence and demonstrate “a complete disregard for human lives, humanitarian international law and the most fundamental principles of humanity” Russell stated. She emphasized that civilians, particularly children, must never be targeted in such attacks. She called for independent investigations into all suspected violations and accountability for those responsible, asserting that impunity for offenses against international law cannot be tolerated, especially when the lives of children are at stake.

Violence against children is unforgivable and must be “immediately stopped” Russell added, reiterating that “no child should ever experience such horrors.

Sudan has been embroiled in conflict for two years, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of at least 13 million people, according to UN estimates. The situation in North Kordofan has notably deteriorated in recent weeks, leading to increased displacement, civilian casualties and restricted access for humanitarian aid.
