Summer Travel: Could Your Vacation Dates Change?

The German government’s tourism coordinator, Christoph Ploß, is advocating for a realignment of summer holiday dates across federal states and a broadening of the overall holiday timeframe. In an interview with “Bild”, Ploß expressed strong support for increased flexibility and a de-synchronization of holiday schedules.

His proposal aims to create a more equitable distribution of tourist activity throughout the peak season. Ploß believes extending the general holiday period, potentially beginning earlier in June and concluding later in September, would lead to more consistent occupancy rates in accommodations, restaurants and leisure facilities. This, he argues, would enhance local tourism acceptance and reduce stress associated with travel. Tourists could anticipate fewer instances of inflated prices and experience a smoother journey.

Specifically, Ploß envisions ending the unique Bavarian scheduling system, currently the last federal state to commence summer holidays. He proposes a rotational system for all states, ensuring a wider range of experiences, with some enjoying earlier holidays in June or later ones in September.

The overarching objective, according to Ploß, is to optimally balance the interests of tourism businesses and leisure travelers when determining the timing of summer vacations.
