Syria: Concerns Grow Over Reports of Executions

Following a recent escalation of violence involving multiple ethnic groups and government forces in Syria, Germany’s Foreign Ministry is urging a thorough investigation into allegations of executions of Druze civilians.

Ministerial spokesman Christian Wagner, responding to inquiries from the dts news agency, stated that the events of the past few days, particularly reports of attacks on civilians, “must be investigated, prosecuted and clarified”. He affirmed that this matter would be raised with the government in Damascus.

Wagner acknowledged the Syrian government’s efforts to end the violence and restore public order, noting the government’s declaration of a unilateral ceasefire. He added, however, that the ceasefire appears to be frequently violated, according to available reports.

Addressing questions regarding Israel’s perceived role as a “protector” of the Druze community, following an incident involving an attack on Israeli military vehicles by Syrian government forces, the spokesman emphasized that Syria should not become “a pawn of foreign powers”. He reiterated the importance of upholding Syrian sovereignty and suggested that Israel, too, has a vested interest in a stable and functional government in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights previously accused government forces of executing civilians, reporting over 200 deaths, including 21 Druze civilians allegedly executed arbitrarily.
