Syria Elections: Germany Calls Vote a “Key Step

The German government has described upcoming parliamentary elections in Syria as a “milestone” in the country’s political transition. According to a spokesperson for the Foreign Office in Berlin, the elections for the People’s Assembly, scheduled for September and based on a constitutional declaration issued in March, represent a significant step forward.

The electoral process will involve a mixed system, with approximately two-thirds of parliamentarians being selected indirectly or regionally through electoral bodies, while the remaining third will be appointed by the transitional president. The spokesperson emphasized that the composition of the parliament will largely depend on how the president exercises this appointment authority.

The German government stated it is currently engaged in discussions with the Syrian transitional government and is actively advocating for the political inclusion of all demographic groups, particularly minority populations. A spokesperson stressed the importance of inclusive elections as a prerequisite for establishing a peaceful and stable system in Syria.

Acknowledging the elections mark a significant development after 13 years of conflict, the government indicated it will be monitoring the process, focusing on factors such as transparency and the breadth of participation, irrespective of ethnicity, gender, or religion.
