Syria Elections: Germany Praises, Criticizes Process

The German government has expressed a mixed reaction to the ongoing parliamentary elections in Syria. A joint statement released Sunday evening by the Foreign Ministry and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development acknowledged the elections as a tentative step towards greater political participation following years of conflict and authoritarian rule.

The statement recognized that these elections to the Syrian National Assembly mark the commencement of a political process focused on inclusivity and institutional change, occurring relatively soon after the cessation of large-scale civil war.

However, the German government underscored a critical condition for the legitimacy of the electoral process: the ability for citizens across all regions of Syria to participate. The statement specifically highlighted the need to reschedule voting in the governorates of Hasaka, Raqqa and Suweida where elections have not yet taken place.

Achieving this requires an agreement between the Syrian government and authorities in Northeast Syria and Suweida regarding the future status of those provinces, demanding compromise from all involved parties and upholding the territorial integrity of Syria.

The German government reiterated its commitment to advocating for a genuinely inclusive political process within Syria, one that encompasses all societal and religious groups. The statement emphasized the importance of the National Assembly reflecting the diversity of Syrian society.

Germany pledged to continue closely monitoring the transition process in Syria and supporting the Syrian people in realizing their aspirations for a peaceful and self-determined future. The government also announced plans for reconstruction efforts focused on key areas including healthcare, infrastructure, education, water management, economic development, strengthening governance and the rule of law. Furthermore, support for civil society is planned to encourage participation in the political transition process.
