Almost a year after a knife attack on a Spanish tourist at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial, the perpetrator has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. The Kammergericht convicted the 20‑year‑old Syrian on Thursday of several offences, including attempted murder.
He allegedly travelled from Leipzig to Berlin on 21 February 2025 with the intent to carry out a knife attack on presumed non‑believers. At the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin‑Mitte, he stabbed the Spanish tourist, causing life‑threatening injuries. Earlier in the same day, he had sent a photo of himself to members of the Islamic State, apparently urging the group to take responsibility for the act.
The defendant was arrested the same day and has remained in remand custody ever since.
