Taliban Talks Spark Furious Backlash

A leading figure within the German Green Party has publicly urged the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, to curtail the actions of Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. The call follows Dobrindt’s recent policies regarding the rejection of asylum seekers at the German border and his stated intention to engage in discussions with the Taliban regime concerning the deportation of convicted criminals and potential security threats.

Konstantin von Notz, deputy parliamentary group leader for the Greens, expressed concern over Dobrindt’s unilateral approach, stating that his actions are damaging Germany’s relations with its European partners. He emphasized that the Interior Minister’s proposition to negotiate with the Taliban, effectively signaling a form of recognition of the terrorist organization, disregards established international consensus.

Von Notz highlighted the problematic nature of the individuals Dobrindt intends to engage with, pointing out that the Taliban’s interior minister, Haqqani, is the subject of a $10 million FBI reward for his involvement in terrorist activities and is indirectly implicated in the deaths of German soldiers in Afghanistan. He further noted that Russia’s recent recognition of the Taliban regime underscores the precarious company Dobrindt now finds himself in.

The Green politician questioned whether Dobrindt had consulted with the Foreign Ministry before proposing the negotiations and acknowledged growing criticism from within the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He concluded that if Germany’s global reputation is to be preserved, Chancellor Merz must intervene and instruct Interior Minister Dobrindt to reconsider his plans.

The proposed negotiations followed Dobrindt’s declaration in a recent interview where he outlined plans for a deportation flight to the Hindu Kush region, reportedly brokered with Qatar.
