Tanit Koch: New NDR Chief Replaces Fired Julia Ruhs

The North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR) has announced Tanit Koch, formerly of Bild newspaper, as the new co-host of the broadcast series “Klar” replacing Julia Ruhs. NDR confirmed the appointment on Friday, stating that Koch will both moderate and contribute to the editorial work of the program, which is produced by NDR. Ruhs will continue her role as moderator of the Bavarian Broadcasting (BR) segments of the show.

Future episodes of “Klar” will be produced alternately by NDR and BR, solidifying the format following a pilot phase and evaluation period. The program is known for addressing contentious social and political issues. According to NDR’s announcement, “Klar” aims to tackle debates at the heart of societal discourse.

Juliane von Schwerin, NDR’s deputy program director, stated the decision to continue the format demonstrates a commitment to establishing firm structures. “With Tanit Koch, we have gained an experienced journalist and opinionated moderator for ‘Klar'” von Schwerin said.

Koch expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “I am delighted to present the format ‘Klar’ alternately with Julia Ruhs. I see it as an opportunity to contribute to the diversity of opinion in public service broadcasting from an external perspective.

The previous announcement regarding Ruhs’ departure from the Hamburg-based segments of “Klar” sparked significant public debate, drawing comments and criticism from within the German government and prompting calls from political factions.

Ruhs, 31, is known as a prominent voice within public service broadcasting, frequently expressing conservative viewpoints. Koch’s appointment introduces a new colleague whose perspectives are considered outside the left-green political spectrum. Notably, Koch previously led the election campaign communications for Armin Laschet, the CDU’s candidate for chancellor in 2021.
