Tech Giant Tax Fight Erupts

SPD parliamentary group leader, Dirk Wiese, has refuted calls from conservative factions to abandon plans for a digital tax targeting companies such as Amazon and Google.

Speaking to RTL and ntv, Wiese argued that large technology corporations repeatedly avoid their financial responsibilities through minimal tax rates and should be subject to increased taxation. He stated, “Those who generate substantial profits should also contribute more significantly.

Acknowledging that the immediate implementation of a digital tax is complicated by ongoing customs negotiations with the United States, Wiese emphasized the necessity of continued discussion on the matter. He pointed to concerns felt by small and medium-sized enterprises and other businesses who believe large corporations bear a disproportionately low tax burden.

The comments follow recent reservations expressed regarding the digital tax by Jens Spahn, parliamentary group leader of the conservative Union and CDU Economics Minister Reiche.
