Workers at Tesla’s Grünheide plant in Germany are pushing for a Christmas bonus of at least €1,500, citing high production levels and ambitious targets. The works council, with strong support from the IG Metall union faction within it, has formally requested the company leadership to distribute the special payment to all employees.
A petition campaign utilizing postcards began earlier this week, demonstrating the workforce’s commitment to their demand, according to reporting by Handelsblatt. The union highlights the site’s increasing production demands and a recent communication from plant manager André Thierig, who noted that the Model Y is projected to be Europe’s top-selling electric vehicle by the first half of 2025, necessitating a significant increase in production plans by year-end.
Works council representatives emphasized the dedication of employees, stating they have consistently met and exceeded expectations. Jan Otto, regional leader of IG Metall, stated that the financial means to provide the bonus exist, given the workforce’s significant contributions.
The works council’s request is also framed in the context of a substantial executive compensation package approved in the United States, with concerns raised regarding the scale of potential remuneration for Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The previous holiday season saw employees receive branded red socks with the inscription “Giga” a gesture now viewed by some as insufficient.
