Thailand-Cambodia Border Dispute Intensifies

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated sharply, with recent clashes reported along the shared border. Gunfire exchanges occurred mid-week, with both nations accusing the other of initiating the violence.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of villagers residing in the border region on the Thai side. This action followed Thailand’s decision to expel the Cambodian ambassador and reciprocally withdraw its own ambassador from Phnom Penh. The Thai embassy has also issued a travel advisory urging all Thai citizens to leave Cambodia. All border crossings between the two countries are currently closed.

The Thai military has confirmed strikes against military targets within Cambodia, reportedly utilizing F-16 fighter jets. The Cambodian Ministry of Defense, in response, accused Thailand of attempting to forcibly seize Cambodian territory.

The dispute, which has persisted since the 1950s, primarily concerns the ownership and surrounding land of the Prasat Preah Vihear temple, currently administered by Cambodia. The conflict has seen a resurgence in intensity since the beginning of the year, leading to recent political repercussions. Notably, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was temporarily suspended from her duties following the public disclosure of a telephone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, during which she reportedly expressed criticism of the Thai military.
