Tighter Measures Against Far-Right Extremism

The State Premier of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, has called for a more forceful response to the rise of right-wing extremism. In an interview with “Die Zeit” Woidke stated that stronger measures and repercussions are necessary to address the current climate of attacks targeting individuals with differing opinions, minority groups, youth centers and celebrations of democracy. He drew parallels to the violence experienced in the 1990s, referring to a period marked by extremist confrontations.

Woidke emphasized the need for swift and severe prosecution of extremist acts of violence, stating a priority is ensuring the safety and protection of those advocating for a free and open society. He suggested the establishment of increased numbers of specialized police units, not only to disrupt extremist circles, but also to directly counter their activities.

Following a year since the Brandenburg state election and the subsequent formation of a coalition government between the SPD and BSW, Woidke addressed speculation regarding his own future in politics, particularly in light of the announced departure of Saxony-Anhalt’s Premier, Reiner Haseloff. Woidke affirmed his commitment to completing his current term, reiterating his pledge to serve the people of Brandenburg throughout the legislative period and upholding his responsibilities.
