Trittin Calls for End to German Arms Exports to Israel

A prominent figure within Germany’s Green Party, Jürgen Trittin, is calling for a cessation of German arms deliveries to Israel. In an interview with the German news magazine “Der Stern”, Trittin stated that such deliveries should cease as long as there is a suspicion that the weaponry could be used in violations of international law. He emphasized that this wasn’t a matter of political preference, but a procedural restriction.

Trittin also suggested that halting arms shipments could help bridge the gap between the political establishment and the German population. Recent polls suggest that nearly 75% of Germans advocate for limiting or suspending arms deliveries to Israel.

Beyond domestic considerations, Trittin voiced concerns about the German government’s approach to its relationship with Israel. He distinguished between Germany’s historical responsibility towards Israel and its cooperation with the current Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He criticized what he perceives as a failure to adequately acknowledge the government’s dependence on right-wing and extremist elements. He argued that this differentiation has been insufficiently addressed in recent German political discourse.
