The lifting of the truck driving ban on Sundays and public holidays, a measure proposed by Federal Minister of Transport Steffen Bilger (CDU) due to low water levels, is predicted by the ADAC to result in increased traffic congestion on German highways.
A spokesperson for the automobile club “Rheinische Post” stated that travelers can expect an even higher risk of traffic jams, particularly at road bottlenecks. This shift will also place greater strain on the infrastructure.
Despite these concerns, the ADAC expressed understanding regarding the measure and the necessity of shifting more transport onto the road network. The association noted that this action is justified given the challenges currently presented by the low water levels.
However, the spokesperson stressed that the measure must be temporary, and that core issues such as adhering to rest periods and traffic safety rules must remain in effect.
