The United States is deploying two nuclear-powered submarines to regions near Russia, according to an announcement made by former President Donald Trump on his personal social media platform. The move comes in response to statements made by Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia and current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.
Trump’s directive, issued on Friday, cites Medvedev’s “extremely provocative” remarks as the immediate cause for the submarine deployment. He expressed concern that such statements could have unintended consequences, emphasizing the significance of carefully chosen words.
The deployment is linked to a recent exchange initiated by Trump’s suggestion of a potential timeline for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Trump proposed a deadline of ten to twelve days for such an agreement, a proposal Medvedev subsequently rejected. Trump then publicly criticized Medvedev, describing him as a “failed former president of Russia who still thinks he’s a president.
Medvedev responded to Trump’s critique on the Telegram messaging app, referencing Russia’s “Tote Hand” system, a reportedly automated retaliatory measure linked to the country’s nuclear arsenal that would activate in the event of a perceived attack on Russian leadership.
The deployment of the submarines serves as a visible display of US strategic positioning amidst heightened tensions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
