During a meeting at the White House on Thursday, former US President Donald Trump publicly urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to cease oil purchases from Russia, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump expressed concern over the casualties resulting from the war, questioning the purpose of the continued hostilities.
He reiterated a previous assertion that the conflict’s duration is limited due to the deteriorating state of the Russian economy. The meeting served as a platform for discussions aimed at facilitating negotiations surrounding trade agreements between the two nations.
Trump characterized the bilateral relationship with Turkey as “excellent” encompassing both geopolitical concerns and commercial interests. He indicated an expectation of securing “great trade deals” with Turkey. President Erdogan acknowledged that discussions would also include the potential delivery of multi-role combat aircraft, specifically the F-16 and F-35 models.
