The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday was marked by a notably cordial atmosphere.
In contrast to the strained interactions during Zelenskyy’s previous visit in late February, Trump refrained from any verbal attacks, even when prompted by attending journalists. Zelenskyy, in turn, repeatedly emphasized his gratitude for US support. This followed earlier criticisms from US Vice President JD Vance – who remained silent during this meeting – alleging insufficient acknowledgment from the Ukrainian side.
During the prior visit, Zelenskyy also faced public commentary regarding his attire, with questions raised about whether he owned a suit given his customary military-style clothing since the start of the conflict. This time, Zelenskyy arrived wearing a black suit, which Trump explicitly complimented.
Substantively, Trump largely reiterated his recent statements. He announced the potential for a trilateral meeting in the near future, contingent upon positive developments in discussions with European counterparts. Following these consultations, he indicated he intends to contact Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump expressed a desire for a “long-lasting peace” one that wouldn’t be jeopardized after just two years.
Responding to questions regarding specific security guarantees for Ukraine, including potential troop deployments, Trump offered limited detail. He stated the public would be informed following the meeting with arriving European leaders. He broadly suggested a leading role for Europe, while indicating US involvement-the extent of which remains unclear. Trump also expressed the belief that both Putin and Zelenskyy possess a willingness to bring the conflict to an end, a sentiment that contrasts with accusations he leveled six months prior, suggesting Zelenskyy was “playing with a third world war”.
