Trumping Pauses US Naval Presence in Strait of Hormuz Amid Hopes for Iran Peace Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the military deployment aimed at escorting ships through the Straits of Hormuz will be temporarily suspended. He declared the pause of “Project Freedom” to allow time for evaluating the potential for a peace agreement with Iran. According to Trump, this decision was reached following requests from Pakistan and other countries.

Trump indicated that “great progress” has been made toward achieving a “complete and final agreement” with Tehran. However, he stressed that the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports by the U.S. military will remain in effect. Complementing this, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the operation is strictly “defensive” in nature and is separate from any original conflict with Iran. He added that forces will only fire in retaliation if U.S. troops are attacked first.

The primary purpose of the mission has been to guide vessels that are stranded in the strategically crucial strait due to Iran’s blockade. Recalling the initial day of the deployment, the U.S. Army reported that at least six Iranian speedboats were attacked, and numerous drone and missile strikes were deflected. While Tehran has denied these reports, Iranian media outlets reported recent missile attacks targeting a U.S. naval vessel-reports that Washington promptly refuted.
