German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has welcomed the announced arms deal between the United States and NATO for Ukraine.
Speaking on Monday evening, Merz stated that US President Trump had initiated a significant effort, outlining a plan for the United States to provide substantial weapons to Ukraine contingent upon financial contributions from European partners.
Merz confirmed that he had engaged in multiple discussions with the US President in recent days regarding the initiative. He added that he had assured the President of Germany’s commitment to actively participate.
The Chancellor emphasized that this course of action serves Germany’s own interests. “This will assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s bombing campaigns” he stated. “Only through such support can pressure be brought to bear on Moscow to engage in peace negotiations. Ultimately, we are demonstrating that we, as security policy partners, are working in unison.
Merz concluded by announcing that swift clarification of the specifics of the agreement is underway, with continuous communication being maintained with partner nations.
