An individual has been arrested in Italy in connection with the September 2022 attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines. The arrest, carried out overnight, was made by Italian Carabinieri in Misano Adriatico, in close cooperation with international police cooperation services, following a European Arrest Warrant issued by a German federal judge.
The suspect, identified as Serhii K., is wanted on suspicion of jointly causing an explosive detonation, sabotage endangering the constitutional order and destruction of structures.
German prosecutors allege that Serhii K. was involved in a group responsible for placing explosive devices near the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines in September 2022. The investigation suggests the suspect acted as a coordinator for the operation.
The group allegedly utilized a sailing yacht, commencing its journey from Rostock, to transport the explosives. This yacht was reportedly leased through a German company using fraudulent identification documents and intermediaries.
The explosions occurred on September 26, 2022, causing significant damage to both pipelines. Authorities intend to bring the suspect before a German federal judge after his extradition from Italy. The investigation remains ongoing.
