Ukraine Strengthens Anti-Corruption Measures

The Ukrainian Parliament has advanced a new draft law aimed at restoring oversight of two anti-corruption bodies, following widespread demonstrations within the country. The legislation was approved on Thursday with a significant majority.

At its core, the bill seeks to reverse recent changes that risked compromising the independence of these vital anti-corruption agencies. A prior law, passed last week, had placed the authorities under the control of the Prosecutor General’s office, raising concerns about potential political interference. This decision subsequently triggered substantial public protests, prompting the current legislative action to repeal it.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that the initially passed anti-corruption legislation had been an error. Prior to the current reversal, the move had drawn considerable criticism from numerous international allies, including the European Union, highlighting the importance placed on the impartiality of Ukraine’s anti-corruption framework. The shift reflects a commitment to upholding transparency and accountability within the nation’s governance structures.
